“Yeah, but it’s a dry heat.” These are the words we will be saying to ourselves and to anyone who will listen for the next three months, even though we all know, 100 degrees is hot, no matter what you call it. As temperatures rise, and the temptation to make dashboard cookies grows ever stronger, perhaps we need to find new, cool ways to occupy ourselves? Like do art and view art at the Library? Great idea!
There is still time to see the display from the Sedona Visual Arts Coalition in the lobby in West Sedona. Surely, you’ll enjoy the photograph “Grazing Alone,” by Barbara Altevers. The huge storm cloud coming over the mountain seems to be unnoticed by the horse who’s very busy chomping grass, but I guarantee it will cool you right down as you imagine—ahhhh—monsoon rains. The exhibit ends next Wednesday, so while the temperatures are soaring, stop in for a cool viewing of all the paintings and sculptures.
Soon you can be astounded by the talents of local young artists. This year’s Summer Reading Program: “Adventure Begins at the Library” offers lots of artistic endeavors including the Mini Art Show in July. A mere 16 square inches of canvas can hold a LOT of creativity so pick up your canvas soon (while supplies last) and let your imagination run wild. Submit your masterpiece by June 29; remember there will be prizes in three age groups!
Yes, we have art activities for the whole family, too! Get crafty next Monday at 2 p.m. This month’s Crafternoon is a rock art activity, and you can either take your painted rock home or add it to Salazar, our rock snake! If you haven’t met the ever-growing-longer rocky reptile, check it out near the Commons. And the popular Free-Flow Paint Night will be back in July when you can unleash your inner artist. Whether you’re a seasoned painter or someone who has never picked up a brush before, this event welcomes everyone with open arms. Stay tuned for details.
Already deep into your own art projects but looking for a group of like-minded artists? Stop by the Village Library for Creative Connection on June 27 at 3 p.m. Bring in your current art or crafting project to work on while connecting with other creatives! Projects should be easily portable as the library can’t store projects in the building. Join us and connect with other artists and crafters, work on your current projects, or bring in a finished piece just to share.
While you’re at the Village Library, be sure to view the amazing “Sunset,” by R.C. Gorman. When the sun is setting, you know it’s getting cooler, and this piece makes you feel a little cooler each time you take a look. This true masterpiece was recently donated David and Lucy Schaack. Thanks for beautifying the Village Library!
It’s important to think of the Library as your “third place” – the spot between your “first place” (home) and your “second place” (workspace). In other words, a social place to meet, congregate, relax, engage; and to get cool and creative! It’s hot out there, folks, but it’s cool and artsy at the Library. We can’t wait to say hello and show you around. And for those of you who have made us your “third place,” we thank you, and do tell your friends.
