The phrase “In like a lion, out like a lamb” is a well-known weather proverb that reflects the unpredictable nature of March weather. And the past few weeks sure have lived up to March’s diverse weather patterns and temperatures. But there are many great things to look forward to in this month that ends the first quarter of 2025.
Sedona welcomed Spring, on March 20 Thursday, with sunshine and a few clouds. Not too bad considering the mild winter we had, and yes, the dusting of snow the area received a few weeks back brought much needed moisture to the Verde Valley. Here’s to a hopeful wildflower display at the library in April.
As the month marches onward, there are still a plethora of amazing programs and displays at the not so quiet library. Come in and marvel at the amazing tiny homes, adorning the tops of the bookcases, by artist Mike Medow. These intricately detailed wooden domiciles, over 30 on display, will make your inner Lemuel Gulliver show! When at the Library, also stop and admire the beautiful watercolors on display in the lobby. The Northern Arizona Watercolor Society (NAWS) has shared over 30 works by its members for the community to enjoy. Both installations will be ending on April 1st.
In February, AARP kicked off tax preparation season at both library locations by helping over 140 community members file their state and federal tax returns for free. That’s right, free. Free dollars. Free-99. There’s still time to get your taxes done, come in and pick up an AARP tax packet, compile all the needed information, and call the AARP tax prep number on the packet to make your appointment. Wednesday April 9 in the VOC branch, and Saturday, April 12 in West Sedona, will be the last days the public can avail of this free community service.
On Saturday, March 22nd at 1pm, join other community members in the Commons to experience an insightful presentation on Hopi culture with Lendrick Lomayestewa, a Hopi cultural artist, teacher, and presenter. A member of the Sun Clan from the village of Polacca on First Mesa, Lendrick is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich traditions of his people.
This program provides a unique opportunity to explore Hopi traditions, history, and artistry. Attendees will also have the chance to meet talented Hopi artists, purchase authentic artwork, and learn how to support Hopi cultural projects. Engage, learn, and connect with the vibrant traditions of the Hopi people in this special event. There will be more programs celebrating first people’s nations at the library through June. We hope you’ll be able to attend these worthwhile programs.
Not to get ahead of ourselves but April will see the return of award-winning travel writer, avid hiker, road-trip junkie, and Verde Valley’s favorite son, Roger Naylor. He returns to the library on April 26th to give a talk on Arizona National Parks and Monuments. We’ll touch more on that in a later column.
In like a lion, out like a lamb may prove true as the month of March comes to a close but there’s mutton wrong with that. See you at the next library program!
Community Library Sedona is also a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
